In short

In a feature comparison of seven DLR apps (October 2026), only DLR Test Trainer offers all of this together: 10 test types, exam simulation, adaptive levels, error analysis, offline use, no account, iOS and Android, 4 languages. It does not train MIC with a joystick; for that you need other tools.

Type "DLR test" into the App Store or Google Play and you will now find around a dozen apps. Some train six test types, some ten, one tablet app more than forty modules. Some work offline, others need an account, and at least one has not been updated on the iPhone since 2018. Which app is best for you depends on what you want to practise and where.

This article compares seven apps that are explicitly aimed at DLR test candidates, using fixed criteria. Everything is based solely on the store listings and the providers' websites, checked on 5 October 2026. All sources are linked below.

ImportantDisclosure: this comparison is written by the maker of DLR Test Trainer. We are therefore an interested party. That is why every statement about other apps relies on what their providers say, we point out openly where other apps offer more than ours, and we make no judgements about the quality of other apps.

Which app is best for the DLR test?

There is no single best app for everyone, but there is a clear answer for each goal. In a feature comparison, DLR Test Trainer is the only one of the apps compared that combines ten DLR test types, an exam simulation, adaptive levels, error analysis, offline use without an account, iOS and Android, and four languages. If you want to practise MIC with a joystick, PilotentestTraining or SkyTest will serve you better.

Sorted by goal:

  • All computer-based test types except MIC on your phone, offline, without an account, also in French or Italian: DLR Test Trainer.
  • MIC with a joystick or gamepad, web and app with sync, community features: PilotentestTraining.
  • The largest number of modules on a tablet, including MIC, as a one-off purchase: SkyTest BU/GU Preparation App.
  • Broad cognitive training, according to the provider also for military and air traffic control selection: DLR Pilot Eignungstest Trainer (called Pilot Eignungstest Trainer on Google Play).
  • Just one test type, such as the triangle test or mental arithmetic: specialised single-skill apps such as Triangle Test, Audio Maths or Pilot Mental Math.

No app replaces the official preparation software you receive with your DLR invitation. How apps, desktop software and web trainers fit together is covered in DLR test practice: software, SkyTest and apps compared.

What should a good DLR test app be able to do?

A good DLR app recreates the test types of the DLR test, measures your progress against clear target values and lets you practise under test-like conditions. Practical points such as offline use, privacy and a fair free tier matter too.

  1. Coverage of test types. The DLR test consists of computer-based performance tests (for example SKT, VMC, RMS, KRN, OWT, PPT, WFG), knowledge tests (technical comprehension, physics, English) and the joystick test MIC. The more of these an app covers, the fewer extra tools you need.
  2. Exam simulation. Practising single modules is one thing. Getting through all modules in one sitting without feedback is another. A simulation trains stamina and sequence.
  3. Adaptive levels. The app should tell you when to step up and when a step back makes sense.
  4. Error analysis. A percentage alone says little. It helps to see exactly where you lose points.
  5. Offline use. Keep practising on a train, on a plane or abroad without a data connection.
  6. No account. Less data leaving your device, and no login before your first exercise.
  7. iOS and Android. Important if you switch devices or practise with friends.
  8. Languages. Instructions in your strongest language are quicker to take in, for example French or Italian.
  9. Free tier. You should be able to find out whether an app suits you before you pay.
  10. Transferability. Many candidates apply in parallel to airlines that use other pilot aptitude tests.

How we compared the apps

We compared seven apps using the ten criteria above, plus MIC, pricing model and the date of the last update. The information comes from the store listings (App Store Germany and Google Play Germany) and the providers' websites, checked on 5 October 2026.

  • Selection: apps that mention the DLR test in their name or description and train more than one test type. Single-skill apps and general aptitude test apps (for example Plakos, which lists pilot tests and the DLR as one topic among many) are not in the table.
  • What we checked: description, version history, language list, in-app purchases, privacy details, date of last update.
  • What "n/s" means: the store listing or website does not say. It does not mean the feature is missing.
  • What we did not do: we did not systematically test the other apps ourselves, so we compare stated features, not the quality of the tasks. We do not quote store ratings because the numbers of ratings are very small.
  • Limits: we chose the criteria as an app maker. Other criteria, such as MIC or community, would shift the picture, so we show them too.

What the table shows. In this feature comparison, DLR Test Trainer is the only one of the apps compared that offers all of these together: ten DLR test types, exam simulation, adaptive levels, error analysis, full offline use, no account, iOS and Android, four languages and modules that stay free for good. It is also the only app in the comparison available in Italian. What it does not offer: MIC, a web version, a community and dedicated modules for selection procedures other than the DLR test.

Where others offer more. PilotentestTraining comes closest and additionally offers MIC with a joystick or gamepad, a web app, a training plan with calendar sync, AI-based feedback and crew features. In return you need an account, the app is available in German and English, and it is licensed by subscription terms. SkyTest has the largest scope with 41 modules including MIC, but the full version is designed for tablets. SkyTest itself describes its Lite app as a mobile supplement to its desktop software. DLR Pilot Eignungstest Trainer has more modules than any phone app here, but names them after cognitive skills rather than DLR test types. PilotPass and Dlr Exam Pro each cover six test types, including ROT (cube rotation), which DLR Test Trainer does not have as a separate module.

Which pilot aptitude tests are these apps useful for?

Most apps in this comparison are tailored to the DLR procedure, meaning the Lufthansa Group's basic screening (BU/GU) and the DLR Pilot Certificate. For other pilot aptitude tests such as COMPASS, PILAPT or ADAPT, they train shared skill areas but not the specific task formats of those procedures.

Almost all pilot aptitude tests check similar areas. This is how DLR Test Trainer's modules map onto them:

Skill areaModules in DLR Test Trainer
Mental arithmetic, numerical skillsKRN
Spatial reasoningPPT, WFG
Short-term and working memoryVMC, RMS
Attention and perception under time pressureSKT, OWT
Technical comprehension and physicsTVT, PHY
EnglishENS
Psychomotor skills (joystick), personalitynot included

Other apps take different approaches. According to its description, DLR Pilot Eignungstest Trainer is aimed at future airline and military pilots and at air traffic controller candidates. SkyTest offers separate apps for other procedures, for example UK pilot aptitude screenings, Middle East screenings and SWISS. PilotPass lists a number of airlines in its description. That list is the provider's own statement, which we cannot verify.

Which tests exist besides the DLR test and how to prepare for them is covered in Pilot aptitude test preparation and on the question page Is a DLR app useful for other pilot aptitude tests?.

Free or Pro: what do you get without paying?

Most DLR apps either cost money before you download them or are free downloads with in-app purchases. How much you can really practise without paying varies a lot and is not always stated in the listing.

  • DLR Test Trainer: cube folding (PPT), path figures (WFG), technical comprehension (TVT) and English (ENS) are free for good, including error analysis and level recommendation. You can try each of the other six modules once, and a free placement test of about five minutes shows your strengths, the modules to focus on and suitable start levels. Pro costs CHF 6.00 a month or CHF 20.00 one-off (as of October 2026, local store prices may differ) and unlocks all ten modules, the training plan, history and exam simulation. Details under pricing and modules.
  • PilotentestTraining: free download with in-app purchases. The website lists three terms (1, 3 and 6 months) that renew automatically, and a free start without details of its scope. If you have had at least three months of access and 100 test runs, the provider says it extends your access by three months should you not pass the DLR test.
  • SkyTest apps and PilotPass: purchase price before download, no free version stated in the listing.
  • DLR Pilot Eignungstest Trainer: according to its release notes, two free sessions per module, then a monthly subscription or one-off Pro access.
  • Dlr Exam Pro: free download with a one-off in-app purchase; the free scope is not described.

Work out the price over your preparation period. If you are testing in 2026, you will usually plan two to three months, as described in DLR test preparation 2026. If your test is in 2027, you have more lead time, and a one-off purchase is then more likely to pay off than a subscription. More in DLR test preparation 2027. What an app can and cannot do is covered on the question page Can you prepare for the DLR test with an app?.

TipDownload two or three apps that have a free tier and practise with each for a week. Afterwards you will know better than from any comparison which one you will actually stick with every day.
