What is RMS?

RMS stands for Running Memory Span and is part of the computer-based performance tests within the DLR certificate examination stage 1 (basic medical and psychological assessment). It measures your auditory working memory: the ability to store information briefly, reorganise it mentally, and reproduce it in the correct order on demand — under time pressure and without any visual support.

Unlike classic memory tests where you know in advance how many items are coming, in RMS the length of the sequence is unpredictable. That's the whole point: you can't just relax and "rewind" at the end, you have to continuously keep track of what was just said — hence the name "running". This requirement isn't arbitrary in an aviation context: radio calls, instructions from air traffic control, or checklist items also often arrive without warning and need to be held in mind while you keep working.

Format and procedure

The task is purely auditory: through headphones you hear a sequence of individual digits, usually at a steady pace. The screen shows no numbers at all, at most a neutral input field — you rely entirely on your hearing. At some point the sequence stops, without any announcement. Only then does the prompt to enter digits appear.

Your task: enter as many digits as possible in reverse order, starting with the last digit you heard. If, for example, you heard the sequence 4 – 7 – 2 – 9 – 5, the correct reverse input is 5 – 9 – 2 – 7 – 4. What's counted is not the total length of the original sequence, but how many digits from the end you can correctly reproduce in reverse before your first mistake.

The most common mistakes

Starting to track too late

Many candidates simply listen "passively" to the first digits because they don't yet know how long the sequence will be. That wastes valuable processing time. It's better to engage actively from the very first digit instead of only "waking up" at digit four or five.

Mixing up direction when speaking in reverse

Under stress, it's easy for the direction to get confused — you accidentally start going forward, or jump around midway. That costs not just points but also time, since you then have to correct yourself. The reverse-order logic needs to be automatic enough that it doesn't collapse under pressure.

Wrong headphone volume

If the audio is too loud, it becomes unpleasant and distracting; if it's too quiet, understanding it costs extra cognitive capacity that's then missing for the memory task itself. Both hurt your result even though they have nothing to do with your actual memory performance.

Trying to hold every digit in mind at once

Anyone who tries to store a long sequence "as a whole" quickly overloads working memory. Without structure, it's typically the middle digits of the sequence that get lost first — a classic pattern that a grouping technique can noticeably reduce (see below).

When a mistake happens midway through, some test takers abandon the rest of the input entirely. Use the three-digit block technique

Instead of holding each digit in isolation, group the sequence you hear into blocks of three and silently repeat them to yourself — similar to how you'd remember a phone number. When a new block arrives, drop the oldest one and shift forward. This technique significantly reduces the load on working memory, because you're managing compact "packages" instead of individual digits.

Start with shorter sequences

Deliberately begin training with shorter number sequences and only increase the length once you reliably master a level.
